Case study

Licensing a sensing platform from a university spin-out

A spin-out had one core technology with uses in several industries, and no clear plan for which to pursue itself and which to license.

The challenge

A young spin-out held a patent family covering a sensing method with applications in manufacturing, energy and healthcare. Approaches had come from companies in several sectors, but the team worried that licensing too broadly would undermine its own product plans and its next funding round.

Our approach

  • Mapped each application against the spin-out’s roadmap and resources
  • Defined licensable fields that did not overlap with the core business
  • Prepared a non-confidential technology profile and approached shortlisted partners
  • Structured terms with field and territory limits, milestones and royalty reporting
  • Supported negotiations through to signed agreements, working with the company’s solicitors

The outcome

The spin-out agreed two field-limited, non-exclusive licences outside its core market, giving it partnership revenue and industry validation while keeping its main field exclusive for its own product.
