Case study

Rationalising a manufacturer’s trade mark portfolio

An established manufacturer was paying to renew marks it no longer used, while its newer export brands were unprotected in key markets.

The challenge

Over many years the company had built up registrations in numerous countries, many for discontinued product names. Meanwhile, the brands now driving export growth had limited protection outside the UK.

Our approach

  • Built a complete register of marks, classes, countries and renewal dates
  • Matched each registration to current products and sales markets
  • Recommended which marks to maintain, let lapse or extend
  • Prepared a filing plan for priority export markets with the company’s trade mark attorney

The outcome

The business dropped registrations that no longer served it and redirected that budget to protecting its growth brands in the markets that matter most, with a renewal calendar owned by a named person.
